The last few Security Updates have been a disaster on some systems and this new Combo Update includes all previous Security updates.

The solution is either to reinstall Java 1.4.2 from Apple downloads or (better idea) to redo the last security update. After that, repair permissions, clear the caches (Onyx) and there you go.
