Hi, we're gonna run a pre-prod recording for our band and we're short on mics, all we have left is three nt1 and three toms to mic, 14", 16", 18".

I know it's not a common use for this kind of mic, but is it doable without risks?

thank you.

What means risks??? Life is full of risks. Is your life in danger? Probably not. Will your dick fall off??? Only if your extremely unlucky. Will your mike explode? Not likely. So what's the risk. It might not sound as good as you like but that's what you have ears for. Worst case scenario.....it will sound bad.

it can work, but it might be a better idea to rearrrange the mics on the kit. What other mics are you using? Also, if it's just a pre-prod, there's realy no need to mic the toms.
The problem with using the nt1 on the toms is that 1: its super sensitive so you might need a pad on the mic-pre, and 2: that it will probably pick up the snare and almost everything else in the kit almost as loud...
For most of my pre-pod, I use 3 mics on the kit. 421 or d112 on kick. 57 on snare and nt1 on OH or room...

well dr.harmonica, even though I dont post real often, I've been here for a while now and it's the first time I see someone lacking respect toward other members of this great community. I sincerely hope you'll correct that attitude in the future or leave this forum forever.

Our prod went well for the micing and we finally found some good old sm58, which were better off! The thing is we wanted to have all drum trax separated and were short on dynamic mics...we found a place that rented 3 mics for 10$ each. not a great choice, and 57 would've been better off but eh, it's just a preprod!

nt4 - overheads
57 - snare
57 - hh
57 - bd
58- toms (x3)
my drummer didnt take the 18" floor tom for the occasion...and the space where we were recording.

case closed.

keep this community clean!

My dear Mr. Eaks. Since you have seen fit to impugn my reputation let me bring a few items to your attention. First and foremost you have the sense of humor of a pregnant Hippopotamus trapped in a sand dune. Secondly you asked if there was any risk in the act which you intended to perform, ie using an a microphone for something other then what it was designed for. Let me bring to your attention the fact that then word risk entails that at some time in the future a situation that could be dangerous or bad may result from the action which is intended. Unless you had planned to bludgeon someone with the mike there is little risk to anyone involved in using it.The main risk that you now run is incurring my wrath. Be warned....I will not tolerate anyone without a well developed sense of humor.

Ok look, dont try to pass it all as pure naive humor. In fact, I have a big sense of humor. but when it comes to cybernetic sarcasms, it's sometimes hard to get and you seemed mean to me. you still do with your reply. If I was you, i'd just take my advice of respect and apply it to everyone you answer to on this forum.

Dont worry, even if you knew where I live, i'd still not fear your wrath at all biggrin.gif

Speaking of mics, if you would've been a bit brillant, you'd understand that i was speaking of diaphragm cesures or stuff related to overiding the mic. and even if you would"ve applied that in another way, your answer is still non-constructive at all.

this being said, just remember the rules of respect in a cyber community.
This forum is great and I'm just sad that people like you badmouths and then try to blame the badmouthed.

have a nice day le gro.
