Hi everyone

I need to buy an external hard drive.I'm living in Italy, the enclosure (the best what I found ) pleiades.
The question is wich one.
ATA or SATA?????????
Makes really different for us (for music) or the ATA is more than sufficent????
And wich ATA drive???????The cache is important????
The difference of the price beetwen the ATA and SATA it's not that much.

I dont use to much of tracks, max 40.I'm composing,I'm not a sound engenier.

Thanks a lot guys

Well…

ATA interface works below the possibilities of FW400 (and 800 of course)
SATA is faster than both.

Now an ATA drive should support this number of tracks but it'll be easier in SATA.

ATA drives are not "dead" but it's clear the actuel future is in SATA as are the larger drives. Also, a SATA drive will seat just fine in a desktop mac later in case (I don't know what's your computer but it can be interesting).

Cache is not important as it's large files/streaming handling and cache really make a difference over small files. Now you'll have troubles to find drives with less than 8 MB of cache.

Pleiades are great but use an as silent drive as possible (Seagate, now I love these), as the alu enclosires tend to amplify any noise they make, and let them stand on something that won't add to the injury. In doubt if you can't have a Seagate, check the datasheets of the drives models on the manufacturer website, it's written in.

Thanks lepetitmartin

I'm still using my powerbook,it's still doing what I need but of course I wanna change it for macbook pro.
I need laptop to be able to move.
So I'm going with the sata because the future is that.
Enclosure with sata inside and firewire connectors.
If I'm not wrong..............
I'm away from the computer world from a while I just do my music.

Thanks

If you have other idea about enclosure,please......

Thanks again,I love this forum

Pleiades (I have 5 of them) and the like are reliable, my only remark as I said is their tendency to amplify any noise from the drives. But they have no fan smile.gif

if you can show me where you plan to buy them I could look at the alternatives.

The pleiades here
http://www.macshop.it/action.lasso?Catalog...a/catalogo.html

I found a store in my area where they are selling WIEBETCH products, i don't know what (enclosure or cards...)i'm going tonight to check out.Of course they don't answer for e-mail (tipical) I have to go there.

Actually here in Italy it's not that easy to find specific staff.Anyway.......

Thanks Lepetitmartin

Well, at the shop you give, there's not much choice anyway… the Pleiades are good stuff smile.gif

I've never used Wiebetech products, but you can have a look at their website.

Note that you can buy the enclosure from any computer shop, not only mac ones. PC ones may have alternatives.

I found it ,this one
www.mapower.com.tw/mapower/Product.asp?CateID=128&LineID=10

with Oxford and seagate barracuda IDE drive.I figured out with normal firewire 400 port I can record 28 tracks in the same time.I never gonna do it, max 8.Sata without sata card is the same like IDE because the firewire port.I don't make video so this is more than enough for me.
Doesn't make any difference to spend the money.

Thanks a lot the help.

Don't know these, this time it worked, they must have had problems the other day…

Beware of the blue led, it's tiring for the eyes to have it in front of you. wink.gif Also, some placement of the enclosure may be better than others, My pleiades are placed in a way: the one which is running most of the time is horizontal, on top of 2 others. It's way cooler that way. Not that it gets too hot in its normal vertical position…

Just in case, the link to a given url is of the following syntax:
CODE
[url=http://the_complete_URL]The text used as a link[/url]
You forgot to close the url tag wink.gif
