Good afternoon all, I am having some trouble opening logic (6.4.1) on my G4 POWERBOOK. When I try to open logic I get the "Logic quit unexpectedly" Error msg and logic quits before it even opens. I have recently installed Rob Pappins "Blue" AU. Would this be the issue?

I remember I had the same problem when upgraded from panther to tiger but resolved this by doing an archive install.

First thing should be to check the hard drive and repair permissions (Apple drive utility), next one to try Logic without the third party plug-ins, Eventually try with a new preference file for Logic (remove it from its folder and get it back there if it does not change a thing).

It's likely a plug-in is doing its prima dona.

With the above we should have a better picture.

Thanks Lep, I repaired the disc permissions and tried removing it from its folder but that didnt work either, how do I open logic without 3rd party plug-ins?

the easiest way is to place the plugins on your desktop and add one at a time.

Library/ audio/ plugins/components.

I'd trash the audio midi related preferences and caches… coreAUDIO is seeming to have issues (at last its named here)… btw while you're at it, trash all cache files and restart.

To trash caches, use Onyx or visit all the 3 library folders (system, general and user) and trash everything inside the 3 caches folders, and restart!

If it doesn't work, I'd test the RAM too, time to use Rember (free, uses memtest but can't test all the RAM, it has a GUI) or MemTest (shareware, tests 97% of the RAM in command line).

"Thread 0 Crashed:
0 com.apple.iokit.IOHIDLib 0x01eb1860 IOHIDDeviceClass::fillElementValue(void*, IOHIDEventStruct*) + 192
1 com.apple.iokit.IOHIDLib 0x01eb14dc IOHIDDeviceClass::getElementValue(void*, IOHIDEventStruct*) + 32
2 info.emagic.Logic 0x00390b10 0x1000 + 3734288"

It looks like it is crashing in some IO driver. Either the hard disk, audio or MIDI driver. I am not sure what the IOHIDDeviceClass is but I bet it is one of those three. I would recommend, deleting your logic preferences if possible and temporarily removing any external drives or external audio device drivers. Once things are working, start adding the devices back into your system.

Hello Mr Metro, I have deleted all my Logic preferences. I don't think I have any external audio drivers other that a few native intsruments kore ksd files. I have midi drivers for my m-audio uno midi interface, should i remove this? nothing i have done so far has worked.

thanks for you help with this, seems to be a tricky one.

What you need to do is remove all non-Apple devices until you get this problem straightened out. If you have Kore, I would completely disable it by uninstalling all the drivers. Once you are working again you can re-install it. Definitely remove the MIDI drivers too, or just disable them in AMS (audio/MIDI setup).

Okay, now uninstall Logic and then re-install it using the original disks that you purchased from a reputable dealer.

biggrin.gif Yes I got my Logic from a reputable dealer! Ok re-install it is, just gotta find my discs now. I've got to say I have had more problems with Logic than any other software I have ever used, not on seeing as it is the most expensive software I have ever used. These forums are a life saver as mac tech support isn't even worth talking about, well it's non-existent in my case.

Thanks again.

Yes, these forums are really great, but I've had nothing but good experience with Mac tech support. Not that I've really needed it all that much. But when I first got Logic last year there was some similar annoying problem that I can't quite remember (though I believe it might have involved "Logic Quit Unexpectedly"), and the guy on the other end of the phone was very polite, friendly even, and clearly very knowledgeable, and he helped me get right to the bottom of it. I remember he directed me to some update patch that was buried deep in the bowels of the apple website. And presto! Problem fixed. I imagine you've already tried their phone support on this, and you've tried all of the patches and updates available, so I'm not quite sure what to say.

I wish you the best with this, but it should be pointed out that Logic isn't any more buggy than other audio software (in fact, it seems to be less so than most), and Mac tech support is generally quite good. It just sounds like you have have been incredibly unlucky. unsure.gif I hope the re-install works, and keep reading, maybe one of our friends on here will come up with something.

Yeah, I remember that issue, something to do with updates to application support. Could it be that this is part of the problem here? I mean you are running an older version of logic, maybe it needs to be matched with the correct version of app support. Anyone out there?

Wait 'till they bring out Logic 8 this year and see how helpful they are biggrin.gif

Ps I tried updating app support but i think that was just an issue with Logic 7 that you are talking about.

Hi, Ryanie!

The key phrase in your Mac tech support experience is:

"When I first got Logic. . ."

There is a brief window of opportunity when you first purchase Apple software in which they will assist you with software problems. Once this short time period is up, you can forget about any decent help from Apple Tech Support without paying yet another fee, even if you buy the hardware Apple Protection Plan.

I've already told this story in other forums on this site, but this past year I bought a G5 Quad, anticipating an incredible jump in Logic Pro's performance. The sad part of the story is that I was blindsided by the fact that Logic, being a 32-bit program, actually runs slower and less reliably on this machine than it does on my G4 1.33GHz laptop which is four years old. This is a combination hardware/software issue which Apple provides no concession and no sympathy for, even though it is their fault.

I have called Apple tech support since July of last year trying to find some help with this issue, and every question I have asked regarding this problem has been ignored, deflected and redirected to a marketing pitch along these lines (I have dramatized the dialogue):

ME: "This is a combination hardware/software issue because your 32-bit app does not recognize all the power in my G5 Quad."
APPLE: "Sir, for a mere paltry sum, we will be happy to set you up with an expert who will gladly help you resolve your issue."
ME: "Well, I've already paid a sum for the Apple Protection Plan, which covers hardware, so can someone help me without me having to pay another fee?"
APPLE: "Sir, you are not having a hardware issue. You are having a software issue. Now, what credit card would you like to use?"
ME: "I do not wish to use a credit card, sir. I wish to speak to someone who can explain to me why this so-called monster machine of a G5 Quad will barely run two tracks in Logic without slow disc errors and outright crashes."
APPLE: "Yes, sir. This is a software issue that we can quickly resolve if I can just get your credit card informa. . ."

Anyway, you get the idea. When it comes to Apple software, you're on your own, and that's where this awesome forum comes in.

I know this sounds bitter, but Apple tech support is a joke. No offense to you, Ryanie smile.gif I've just got a really bad taste in my mouth after this past year.

Awesome, Ryanie! smile.gif

Hopefully Apple will perk up and do something about their horrible tech support.

The worst is it's among the best year after year in consumer surveys… (not Apple induced) Now the one who had to do with excellent quality of service never complain. rolleyes.gif

Now, I just hate having a call center with someone following a computer driven listing (and not having a clue), it just s… blink.gif
