The Mac OS 10.2.8 update is extremely unsettling for me. I have been a Macophile since the Lisa (through SE, SE/30, IIFX, Performa/powerMac, G4), and against my better financial judgement (and the majority of the machines where I work), I went for a new eMac in August, and trusted the judgement of the retailer ( a local small Macophile shop). I was "auto-updated" to OS 10.2.8, and can now no longer use my older Laserwriter (ethernet), my brand new Canon printer (USB), and I have to go to work tomorrow without my critical printouts. I DO NOT have time for this-That is why I bought a Mac (again) and feel utterly betrayed- I'm holding the paddle at the stinky end of the creek. How do I get my marginal, balky performance of OS 10.2.6 back? If I had the time, I think I could do this (I've learned machine language). BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME!

First NEVER NEVER NEVER auto update.

Second it's one of the bugs of 10.2.8, which is no longer available. (USB and ethernet going bonkers)

third you should revert to 10.2.6 really

the reason behind this is Apple did the update without sending it before to outside developers as usual, these devs are already on Panther from the last WWDC in june and are bound to it to use peculiar developement tools that run only on panther. So anyway they couldn't have worked and try 10.2.8.

Now, you could have reverted "easily" to 10.2.6 if you had made a snapshot of it once installed with one of the utilities available in shareware (sorry, it's 6:50 am and my brain is not working 100% to give the name, someone?)

There's no easy way to revert to 10.2.6 unless you imaged your disk before updating. However, I've heard that the Ethernet connectivity problems can be corrected by replacing the file "AppleGMACEthernet.kext" with the version from 10.2.6, which can be downloaded here if you don't have it:

Then, you know what, eBay your eMac (if won't be hard), and go buy a Windows-based PC and see how much better off you'll be.

Anyone who trusts these goateed-geeks at CompUSA, or any other store, need to grasp some common sense. In the IT world, these "techies" are the lowest rung of the 3,000 ft. ladder.

I too used the auto update to install both of the 10.2.8 updates. Now my G3 beige goes to sleep and will not wake up unless I unplug it. I was able to repair the permissions and can run fsck any time I restart. What is wrong and how do I fix it? 10.2.6 was great. I'm not ever going to own a Wintel box so get over it. [SIZE=7]

Do not use 10.2.8 for nothing. I upgrade to Pather from 10.2.6.

i still love 10.2.6 it is the most stable pdates ever.

Dear God, no - do not take your Mac within 100 miles of the 10.2.8 update. I happened to be online the same day that Apple released it, so I jumped in, downloaded it and installed it on my Macs. Total nightmare ever since.

I have just today finally finished the process of booting into OS 9 (lucky me), dumping the OS X system folder entirely, formatting my hard drive and running a clean reinstall of Jaguar. Then I've had to go through all the updates to take me back to lovely 10.2.6, which is where I'm sticking for now.
