Config:G4 AGP 400 mac OS 9.04 with yamaha cdr / rw 8824S-VK , I WILL ultrawide SCSI adapter SIDE-2936UW-E , and 2sd hard drive from Charismac.
Problem: Can't start from CD drive nor from 2sd drive. It seems that the mac can scan for its OS only on the IDE chain. Bombs and freeze and blocked CD drive.now cannot even recognize original mac os cd.If starting from charismac it searches for a while and then start from first drive. So i cannot defragment 1st drive. I have this strange extensionCDDD driver from charismac which was not enabled but it did not work when i enabled it .It did not see the charismac when on . And yet cd drive works well for burning cds with toast or converting akai format cd with Logic sampler, though once in once stuck got to restart the mac to take the cd out. -------------------- paul

if you try to start from your CDR, it maybe normal, that the mac refuse to boot.
Try with the internal CD, and pree 'C' during boot to force boot on the CD. If it doesnt work, try to zap the PRAM (Alt+apple+P+R at startup) first, then try CD boot. If it still not wok, remove any external drive, and try again. If you cannot boot, the last chance is to remove your SCSI card, and try again. If, without PCI card and no third-party devices connected, you cant boot on the apple CD, pressing 'C' at startup, you can bring your mac to your AppleDealer. -------------------- Prutulz

thanks a lot for caring to answer but the cdrom drive is internal already.the original was a dvd cdreader only so it was removed and replaced by the yamaha, well the music shop sold them like that already maximized for audio.so they say.something i forgot to mention : when failing it says error bus.so of course i tried diferrent extensions settings with toast off and etc one of those changed something it lead to a screen with nothing but 2 arrows and a question mark on a kind of hard disk symbol and then froze when i click on it.

You're running into the not standard Mac hardware problem.
You may have to burn a CD-Rom with the system folder that contains the Yamaha drivers and extensions. The Toast CD reader extension would also help.( it may be all thats required) Also check jumper settings, if you also have an internal zip drive, one of the devices need to be the master. -------------------- G-Dub

Apple does have kits to upgrade internal drives, I've added apple branded zip disk, and DVD-RAM drives.
Check your local Apple Dealer, not Comp-USA. -------------------- G-Dub
