I used to create stochastic noises by throwing windows executables into cool edit/audacity and it created awesome noises I used for a project with a mate of mine.

Sadly I can't do this on the mac anymore with peak or whatever else is out there... like audaci.. wait......yeah like audacity.... it wont allow you to open up anything but audio files

One would say "why would you want to open a jpeg in audacity? or safari.app in Peak?" i'd say "because I like to experiment with noises on what I have (till i can get some mean hardware i.e. pedals and hardware synths)

there are a few programs here that will let you play jpg files and one time I think I loaded a gif instead of a jpg and got a similar noise generating affect like I think you might be describing but maybe the file was corrupt or something. I downloaded it from the net and I only tried it the one time. I know this isn't a solution but maybe it would work for you too at least once.

Renoise (excellent tracker sequencer) lets you import any kind of file as raw audio only costs £40- is this what you mean?

I see your problem. I have never tried to use anything other than audio files to create noise.

But in this way your always trying to create noise from audio. It would be nice if there was a good plug-in that can create pure white/black/pink-noise (a I believe the most promenent ones ae called). If I find any I'll put them here.

Actually, in Audacity, if you go to Project>Import Raw Data, you'll be able to open .txt and .jpg files. Give it a try.
