Have I Fried My Firewire? Options

Hello There.
I was attempting to link a couple of macs with firewire to transer some files. I blatantly didn't know what I was doing and I couldnt get it to work. The problem is that my M-Audio Firewire 410 which was working wonderfully is now not recognised. It is still drawing power from the fw port as the blue light is flashing but it jsut wont recognise. Have I fried the ports or do they just need reseting or something?

try shutting down computer, switching off firewire 410, disconnect firewire cable.Next reconnect firewire cable, power up computer and then switch on FW410.... worked for me after finding post on Ableton forum. glad to pass it on

FireWire target disk mode allows a Macintosh computer with a FireWire port (the target computer) to be used as an external hard disk connected to another computer (the host). Once a target computer is started up as a FireWire hard disk and is available to the host computer, you can copy files to or from that volume.


To use FireWire target disk mode
Make sure that the target computer is turned off. If you are using a PowerBook computer or iBook computer as the target computer, you should also plug in its AC power adapter.
Use a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.
Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop.
When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9) or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X).
Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
Unplug the FireWire cable.

So is it possible that if I did this wrong I might fry the ports? The other machine was running os9, it didnt start up properly and the mouse pointer turned into a little picture of a bomb. it started ok again afterwards...

Maybe the ports have not properly reset, first zap the PRAM and NVRAM, then disconnect everything, and reset the motherBoard/buses.

Zap the PRAM/NVRAM:

hold command-option-P-R on start up, the screen should stay black, hold till you hear the start up sound. Two start up sound you've reset PRAM and NVRAM.

For NVRAM you can do it also thru openfirmware.

Reset the motherboard:

disconnect everything, open the mac, touch the metal (statics), locate the lithium battery, near it there should be a tiny tiny button. Press it 20 seconds. You're done.

Keep the mac unplugged totally at least 3-5 minutes, it'll clear the ports too.

On the other end of the chain, look in the 410 manual how to reset the interface also.

The only way to fry a FW port is to plug he cable the wrong way, once done, it's over in a few seconds. And the cure is a motherboard replacement.

oooh, a gimer of hope! I did that and all seemed to be fine and dandy the 410 lit up like it was recognised in osx and then in os 9 I played some tunes from logic through it then I reboot back in to osx and now it doesnt work at all anymore. Just that blue light flashing away. I went back into os9 and it didnt work there either. I messed about re installing the drivers but no avail. At least I know the fw ports are ok!
