Hi there,
I have owned a Yamaha UX16 for two years and have been completely unable to make it work on either my iMac or my G4 powerbook. The programs I need to use it for are "Encore" and "Band in a Box". This weekend I have tried it for the first time on a PC, a Toshiba Satellite, and it worked, playing my Technics KN200.

For many years I've used the combination of MAC computer and KN2000 to play midi using the programs Encore and Band-in-a-box. This has been with older computers like the LC3 and the powerbook series but they are wearing out and I need to upgrade to OSX. I can't get any midi activity either in or out from iMac or G4. Has anyone any idea why, or better still can someone who has beaten this problem tell me how they did it? I have OMS installed but it just produces crashes.

First of all OMS is for OS9. It doesn't belong in OS X.
In OSX , once you plug a USB interface in, go to Applications folder -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup.
Open the Audio MIDI Setup. if you don't see UX16 in there, try to scan it.

Hi there,
Thanks for reply. I m actually using the OS9.2 version of the iMac since I have no music programs designed for OSX, sorry for not explaining this properly. on the G4 I use the classic face.

On your advice I searched out the UX16 icons, they were in the extensions folder, I copied them into the utilities folder and restarted. There is still no recocnition of the UX16 in the sound in/out file.

There is no Audio MIDI setup in the utilities folder. A search for the name using Fast Find failed to find anything in the computer.

Oh! that completely different,
So you have the UX16 extension, that's good.
First thing, you need to trash that driver you've just copied.
It's not suppose to be there, it has to be in the extension folder.

Then you need to set up MIDI. You can use OMS or FreeMidi to do it.
You can use one or another not both. I personnally prefer FreeMidi.

From the OMS or FreeMidi folder, you should have some kind of "Read Me" or PDF file that tells you exactly how to set up MIDI.
Follow the direction and you'll be fine.

Umm..are you actually booting into OS9 or just using classic on the g4, classic won't work. You must set to boot from an OS9 folder in 'startup disk'.

Does OMS see the UX16. Have you got the latest / last version of OMS, 2.3.8? The OMS folder in the system folder must contain the usb midi manager and a driver for your UX16.

Did you put the G4 and iMac Mac OS9 on yourself, have you run Norton Disk Doctor or disk first aid recently, does the mac crash anyway without running OMS setup?

That is correct.

What kind of iMac and PowerBook are you using? The more recent models can not boot to OS9.

I think the last OS9 bootable PowerBook G4 was the 1 GHz / 867 MHz (introduced Nov'02) with PowerPC 7455 processor, and the last OS9 bootable iMac was the 800 MHz model (introduced Jan'02) with PowerPC 7450 processor.

Hi Deigh, got your pm..

The only g4 desktop that won't boot into OS 9 is the FW800 model, all others will. I'm afraid OMS will not run under classic. Try and find 'startup disk' in system preferences and go from there.

OMS 2.3.8 get it here...
macmusic midi d/loads

Re-install OMS 2.3.8 and see how you get on.

Do you use 'universal access'..the 'turn on zoom' feature and the 'switch to white on black' work really well for a musician I know with vision difficulties?

Actually that's a dead link mate, try here...

sharewaremusicmachine

you really need to fix the crashing if possible, then you can work from a stable place.

OK I surrender. Two days of experimentation and still no midi on my iMac os9. I'm giving up and going back to the old LC3 with A4 screen and my powerboook 190.
Out of date technology Yes, I know, but it does work!
My G4 returned from repairer and promplty crashed agin. I'm hoping to get the retailer to take it back.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I've learned a lot, but obviously not enough.

Does anyone know of a midi swop site where I can donate my arrangements for Encore and downoad others?
