I spoke to a Mac technician today who told me something I had never heard before, have a hard time believing, and haven't tested. He said that ALL of the new Macs can be made to boot to OS 9 by simply wiping the drive (writing zeros) and reinstalling 9. He said whatever Apple has done to prevent the newer Macs from booting into 9 is all on the HDD, and that writing zeros to the drive is all it takes to get around the system. I doubt it. I asked him about it, and told him I had heard that it was a firmware change to the logic board. He said that wasn't true, and that he had already done this many times. I don't believe a word, but I'm now wondering if anyone has heard of this.

If it were true, all OSX only G4 would boot in OS9…
Maybe even G5s…

A guy I know (movie composer/arranger, big Mac-head) claims he has done the trick many times, and he told me he's available to explain me how.
He says it takes a few hours and a laptop (we've got the same model iBook and G4), but that I have to get ready for a big headhache!
Now he's abroad, but I will ask him to show me the trick.
I need it, and as long the logic board is not in danger, I'm ready to format the HD if it doesn't work!!!

It spoke to the Swedish Apple Store today and they told me that the new cheapish combo-drive eMacs boot in os9. The superdrive edition does not. I´m still trying to get this confirmed, so anyone...?

Maybe a cheap 1ghz eMac would be good to use as a transitional computer between os9 and OSX? Finish up all projects done on the old os9 compatible hardware/software, while at the same time building a new productive environment in OSX.

Forgot to ask if they´d fixed the eMac noisy fan...

abcdaniel, the SAS is right, check the PCI slots they are also different (old fashioned)

This is a transitional computer… cool.gif

Yeah, lepetitmartien, I sort of only thought about my own situation: No PCI-peripherals but lots of legacy os9 software.
Of course the users of os9-depedent PCI-peripherals will have to opt for a different transitional computer than the eMac.
I also tried to check out the ability for OSX-only macs to boot in os9 on other forums and the only thing I found was unconfirmed rumors or straight out false claims...
I hope Buddy Boy and rubbersoul has got some real tricks up their sleeves... wink.gif smile.gif

I don't thint that's the way to boot from OS9 (I'll know something more next week), but how do you write zeros to your HD?
I have found nothing like that in the HD utilities, though I remember having done it a few time in OS9.

Have you seen a certain PC commercial ( uh, okay, maybe not you guys in Euro-land sad.gif ) where the family sits in their van outside a PC store and kidnap a tech and take him home to fix their 'puter?

Maybe if we head down to Cupertino...
