I know that the two are completely different, and monitors are so that you can get a great basis to mix on for all... but I was wondering what a suggestion would be, and if my computer sound was routed to the monitors (could this be done through FirePod interface?) to listen to iTunes stuff... would it sound great or like crap?

I am on a Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz and I plan to record live situations and studio situations of jazz combos and solo performance, so I plan to record everything at once, but I want to have monitors to reference this to, in real time (because I don't plan to use many effects, except maybe something for mixdown) so, for a jazz recording, is there a specific kind you suggest? Could they be also used to listen to music from the computer, or would they sound bad? Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Something to keep in mind however is that monitors sound as good as the room it's in. Since you said you want to monitor what is being recorded as you record, I'm assuming you are going to have it blasting in a control booth or something. While control booths are cute, they are usually not built for the best acoustics (given the space constraints of most places) so the monitors might not give you the best representation. One difficult thing are the bass frequencies - parallel walls case standing waves, and most booths are too small to let the bass fully develop.

That being said, last session I helped out, we had a dynaudio BM15A. Great stuff that's really clear but not harsh. When I do location recordings with my firepod, I just have two pair of well isolated headphones because I'm too new to get good gigs with a full booth set up. My weapon of choice there (for now) is a Fostex T40, AKG K270 Studio, and ofcourse the nasty sounding but revealing Sony MDR-7506.
