Hi!
I'm only running 10.2.8 and eager to upgrade, but I decided to wait for Tiger. Since there is no news (yet) of updates to my software and hardware (tracktion, tascam us-122, recycle) to support Tiger, I was wondering whether it's worth upgrading. I know that when the orginal OS X came out, many people ran a dual boot of OS 9, enabling them to switch from one to the other easily. Is this possible with 2 versions of OS X? If not. What are people's thoughts on the wait for updates? For panther, how long did it take manufacturers to produce support? Thanks for your help, D. |

I'm up to 10.3.9 now, there's no problem with switching back & forth between 9 and 10.

Switching between 2 flavours of OS X will bring way less headaches than between OS 9 and OS X. Because there are issues when you switch between 9 and X. The way OS X handles drives is very different and on some configs it's a pain in the a…
Between 10.3.9 and 10.4.x it should be smooth as a baby. (now, we'll see… -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

Good to hear! However, I would only like to this if I have to. Seems like a lot of hassle to hold onto an inferior operating system. Searching on some more general mac sites, I found a lot of people confident that software would be backwards compatible. I'm doubtful. What do you think?
If I upgrade to Tiger, removing Jaguar, will my Tascam US122 just stop working? Will tracktion die too? That would just be too much! My intuition leads me to believe that these programs, hardware should be supported in a more advanced version of the os, but that their behaviour may not be the same. In other words bugs. Would I be right in thinking this? |

Right now, I don't see reasons to be still in Jaguar. Panther works like a charm.
Now for tiger compatibility, given the time developpers have had since the start of the beta releases and it's been more than a month now since the Gold, any driver at least not working in Tiger should be fixed very very soon after Tiger release. Also we know that a 10.4.1 is already in the pipeline and due to release very fast (it's needed for the video app shown by Apple at the NAB). So we can only reasonably think that the Panther/Tiger move should be as soft as possible. Now till we have Tiger and test in real lif, we can't be sure. I haven't tried myself not being entitled to betatest Tiger. Besides that, I don't think to beta test OS is a good thing for most end users. Now one thing I councelling you is to start from scratch for Panther and Tiger, back up, erase, install. there has been some headaches for some users who did not this when they came from Jaguar to Panther, and it worth remind it it… -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

Hello, folks. First time posting as I just found this forum on a troubleshooting search.
I can't speak for 10.4, but I've just had my Sunday ruined by doing Apple's recommended upgrade to 10.3.9 and Quicktime 7 on my Sawtooth G4. Since doing this my Tascam US-122 won't output properly - playback is choppy and alternates rapidly between bursts of static-riddled signal and silence. Followed Apple's "new" recommendation to reinstall Quicktime 6.5.2, but the US-122 is still out. Also tried repairing all permissions and reinstalling the latest Tascam driver, but no luck. Will probably have to try reinstalling 10.3.8 next, whenever I can spare the time. Audio from the onboard minijack is fine, it's just the Tascam that won't work. |
