Hi, I have a g4 powerbook & bought an oxford hard drive enclosure & I can't seem to write to it- It shows up in the disc utility & info shows it to be writable (I have formatted it) - & it also shows up on my hardware profile. But I can't seem to bring it to the front to copy information to it. What am I doing wrong?

I see 3 possibilities:

- bad format (either something went wrong, or you're not in HFS+ for example)
- bad cable… it happens
- You are not the "owner" of the drive. Check if it has been set to work with another username only (ask informations of the volume using the finder command-I) or something similar.

btw, is it powered properly?

I don't know that it's the cable necessarily because it is recognized as hardware & inside of the disc utilty - I may try to erase & reformat the drive & see what happens

If you have time (it's long…) use the erase option to be sure the drive starts with _nothing_ left on.

What exactly does that mean?

Could you describe what you're trying to do?

I think he means it's not available in the finder, hence the problem.

That was precisely what I meant, it wasn't showing up in finder or on my desktop (like a CD or DVD would when you insert it into the drive). I did reformat it one more time & then erased it in my disc utility & now it shows up in both finder & on the desctop as with a Firewire icon. Pretty cool, thanks.
