This will be my last silly and embarassing question....but, am I supposed to plug in my electric guitar into an amp, and then into my Fasttrack USB?

So I just got this M-Audio FastTrack USB Studio Bundle. When I use the microphone simply for vocals there's a delay from when I'm speak/singing to when it comes through the monitor. Is there anyway to patch this up? And I apologize if this is a ridiculously embarassing question, but I'm fairly new to this, so any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I am doing all of my recording on a new MacBook 1.83GHz...yada yada yada.
