Hello! I've started working with live drums, bass, voice and guitar and what I'd like to be able to do is record all four, just in mono [two mics, two jacks] into Logic Audio [4.7 on an iMac 600 mhz or a PowerBook 400mhz].
I've seen a few firewire / usb devices but a lot of them don't seem to be capable of doing what they're supposed to do [the M-Audio devices - ie Firewire 410 - seem like what I'm looking for but seem a bit dodgy in practise]. Any ideas? |

The MOTU 828 will cover you. The new MkII is a very lovely machine, but if you can find a secondhand MkI, that will do you just as well and should save you a couple of hundred dollars. Basically the same machine, it just doesn't have as many flashing lights.
Yeah, yeah, I know - it doesn't have a Midi input and a few other niceties either, but it's a rock-solid solution. You also get AudioDesk software, which is great if you just want to record your band like you say. It's an alternative to Logic, anyway, and comes free with the 828. |

Thanks for that! I don't need any midi capabilities anymore so that's no problem. I'll be scowering ebay then! Thanks again.

I will also make a pitch for a used MOTU 896 if you think you'll need more mic inputs in the future. The notable differences between the original 896 and original 828 are sample rates (896 can sample up to 96 kHz) and all of the 8 analog inputs on 896 have preamps.
The 896 has been replaced by the 896HD, which has added even more features. This post has been edited by gregoryf: Sat 22 Nov 2003, 20:24 |
