Basically, to save you the trouble of me wording it badly, I've made a video to explain my troubles. Any help is much appreciated, as this is massively frustrating.

Oh well, thanks for lending a hand! I'll just fork out for a much nicer cable instead of using this (as you rightly guessed) cheap tat. Thanks for the help!
