I'm aware of the track counts on B&W G3s and G4s with MOTU hardware, but I was wondering what kind of a realistic track count could I look at with a 9600? Say i was using a MOTU 2408 <for the sake of argument> in the 9600 with a G3 <or G4> upgrade card and an Ultra SCSI card? Anyone get satisfactory results with a setup like this?

can't really answer your question but... I will offer a bit of advice. Unless you already did the cpu upgrade... DO LOTS OF RESEARCH on the different brands before purchasing. I have read about problems with some upgrades not fully compatible with newer OS systems and a couple of other apps. I am considering upgrading my 350mhz G3 but a little scared to invest a few hundred or more dollars on something that isn't going to work well with all my apps. It reminds me of the PC issue with non-intel cpu's... some software just will not work on them but it is a small percentage but if you're main app is in that small perventage... then you want to stay with only intel cpu's. Same thing applies with Apple third party cpu upgrades.
