QUOTE (Synthetic @ Aug 20 2002, 12:58) yeah... the jaguar update was a bit lame. I don't mind paying for an update when it really offers something for the money but just didn't see that much of an improvement that made it worth $130 US so I will be staying with 10.1.5 until they make the update worth my money. You've got to be kidding. It's one thing to lament the lack of OS X apps and that's understandable as many components in OSX have matured under 10.2 to the point where Developers have a stationary target. For those who want to know the REAL DEAL OSX offers. Quartz Extreme- If you have an AGP card with a card 16mbs or more you can take advantage of offloading some gui functions to the card. That means more processor cycles to your audio apps! Multithreaded Finder- Tired of slow scrolling and windows. Tired of waiting for the finder...it's now multithreaded and much faster. GCC compiler- most apps haven't been recompiled with the new GCC 3.1 compiler but when they do you should see a slight speed increase in many apps. Rendezvous- Want to link up Macs without typing in networking settings. It's easy as pie with this. Admin- Check out the new setting in the Get Info box. Easy to set permissions etc. Nice. More than one can be open now as well. CUPS- have a pesky printer with no OSX drives CUPS(Common Unified Printing Service) allows you to print to some printers with flaky drivers. and YES USB printer sharing is BACK. Sherlock3- Just flat out cool. Anyone who say this isn't helpful is crazy. Addressbook- aren't you tired of duplicating your contact info in every app? Systemwide support for this should be an end to non synchronized information Mail. much beefed up with GREAT anti spam support. There's so much new in 10.2 anyone telling you it's a lame update is purely being disengenuous. EVERYTHING in 10.2 has been updated. It's a HUGE update with new features to boot. http://www.apple.com/macosx/jaguar/morefeatures.htmlThe updates to CoreAudio, CoreMidi, and the new Midi Control panel are worth half the price alone if you make music with your mac.

Synthetic,
I totally agree with you as far as Audio. Now I realize why we weren't seeing any OSX apps. Core Audio and some Midi functionality wasn't ready. Nor was the I/O Kit for hardware. If I was a Developer I wouldn't want to ship a product using immature API's.
I think that Apple announce Logic OSX soon and hopefully we'll see a steady stream of updates.

let's face it, osx is a can of worms that apple have opened. forget the promises, let's just have something that works when it gets here, and in the meantime, is anybody suggesting that making music in os9 is some kind of a problem? i've said this before in these forums, os9 is as good as that technology gets! let's not be in a hurry to dump it and re-start with something that's just going to present a bunch of problems that we have to live with as the developers work out the answers. we've already done that a couple of times... osx is great but i don't NEED it to make music. i use logic and quite frankly, i'm a bit scared about the way it's all going, i do have faith, but a new os isn't imperitive to my being able to make music on a mac. peace 2 all.
