I just bought Logic Pro 7 Academic version which was $500 cheaper than the retail, but is there a difference between this and the retail version? I know that my XSKey has Academic written on it, and the barcodes have replaces stickers with the Academic barcode, but is there anything different software wise? Thanks!!!

My understanding is that there is a difference the day you'll want to upgrade to the next Logic Pro version...

That is what I have heard, that you can't update it to the next version of Logic Pro... I am not fully aware of what people meant when they say next version. Do they mean 7.1 to 7.2? Or 7 to 8? I mean, it doesn't bother me too much if I have to buy Logic 8. Retail is $1,000, and an upgrade is $300? So I would essentially save $300 if I kept buying Academic Versions.

Here is the answer when I asked at the Apple owned support forum...
It is upgradable. I had the .edu version of Logic Pro 6, and recently upgraded to 7.1. There is nothing on the XSkey that differentiates an .edu version versus the regular, full-priced version, so as long as your XSkey is valid for Logic Pro or Platinum, you're golden. ![]() -------------------- G-Dub

Honestly you could probably put in a local community college and you might be able to get away with it... they didn't ask for any I.D. or proof of college. I don't know if they later check that with the schools or what, but I have ordered 5 things and never had to be asked about proof of being a student. *shrug* If you know someone, that goes to Elementary school or College, you could definately have them order it. I found my K-12 schools on there and got the same discount as I would at Ball State. -------------------- Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz Rev. There is NO difference and you CAN upgrade. I bought Logic Pro Academic v7 and the 7.1 upgrade a while back and gots no probs. Hope this helps...

OK. Here is an example of the academic upgrade situation...
I own an academic copy of Logic Express 6.4. It was purchased as academic institution (I am an IT professional at a school) for $100. I could upgrade this to Logic Express 7.1 as retail for $100. But why would I want to do that when I can just buy another copy academic for $100? I would then own 2 licenses and XSKeys, whereas if I 'upgraded' I only have 1 license and XSKey. So it's like this, you CAN upgrade an academic copy, but the cost is the same as buying an entire new copy, because there is no 'academic upgrade pricing' only retail. Get it. Cheers -------------------- |

There may have not been a difference between XSkeys in Logic 6 and before, but with the new white XSkeys I'm not so sure. My XSkey has "Retail" printed on it. The original poster has "Academic" printed on his. Beyond this maybe there's no difference, but when Logic 8 comes out and people who've got academic versions try to upgrade, maybe they'll be out of luck.
Obviously it works for smaller updates to keep Logic in step with Garageband, but for the bigger updates...remains to be seen. |
