If you were running in os9 then Pro Tools Free would be the best option, but seeing u are in panther, PTF is os9 only... If you wanted a cheap solution, your best bet is to find something on the link that was suggested by Sonne - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/Good luck! Oh, and make sure everything is set up correctly in CoreMidi setup in Apple's CoreAudio setup thing. It's pretty easy and self-explanatory.
