Has anyone tried Tiger on a slow machine? I have a TiBook 550 with 1GB ram and am considering an upgrade. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

The few around (not me) with it installed are toying still with it… If it's like Panther, we should have them show their heads after a day or two… unshaved, red eyed… laugh.gif

The few reports we have have on the French side insist on the clean install, some seem to have some small troubles if not doing so. wink.gif wink.gif

For the slow computers, the finder is more punchy, it should be a good news.

Well, a warning, if you plan to instal Tiger as you only OS, you should really clone your panther etc. and also pay attention to the updates to the software, in audio it's a flood! New drivers, eventually upadates to apps. Beware! If the editors do so, it's because it-won't-work-without… wink.gif

One of our member Bonatoc just finished to install everything and is discovering the new mLAN for his 01X…

Generally speaking mac OS-X has actually gotten real speed bumps along the major
releases. (perhaps not always dramatic speed increases - but still...)
Tiger is no exception to this rule.
Reports from various users on the Unicornation BBS seem to indicate that Tiger is
indeed a bit snappier than Panther.
Also check out this article from Ars techica:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars

The article is long sad.gif but very instructive in parts and required reading for any Mac enthusiast. tongue.gif
The article can downloaded as pdf-file and perused at your leisure.

The arstechnica article is great, I'm into reading it (about to start page 3), lots of under the hood input on why things are like they are in a developer/editor point of view, yet still decipherable for the average mac geek.

The last 10.3.8 and 10.3.9 were definitely almost snappy, i can't wait to see Tiger running here myself. I'll install it on the old G3 too, any performance increase will be instantly seen on it (G3 BW 400). But it'll wait a few days, too busy now.

Upgraded to Tiger today. No problems so far.
Everything is a bit snappier. Life is good.

I've installed tiger on my Ti 15" 500 with 1Ghz of ram and eveything seems crispier that before, even the screen seems clearer, with reason 3.0, there is no difference than before, everything works fine. I did an upgrade installation, so all my setups have remained the same. I was wondering if a clean install will improve anything, I was temted to do it but in the end I went for the simpler way.

Did the simple upgrade from OS X 10.3.9 and no regrets. Tiger is the icing on the OS X cake. Sweet! (An eMac 1.25/SuperDrive running Logic Pro 7, Reason 3, Live 4, iLife 05, iWork and lotsa others. 3rd Party stuff usuallly works and on ocassion needs to be updated or just reinstalled).

Stoprunner!

If your "Archive & Install" works for you like mine did.
Dont bother reformat and re-install, I dont really think you'll
gain enough (if anything ) to make it worthwhile.

Another round of warnings: check back your software/drivers you need are available for Tiger (for example : Digidesign stuff is NOT compatible, it just doesn't work at all). Members keep upgrading stupidly and it's a waste of time till the necessary updates are available.

For the lucky ones with the software ok for the latest feline: enjoy!

Any reports for Cubase and DP would be great cool.gif

I am using my G5 too with tiger, and with "my Favorite" m-audio firewire 410 interface, which, I discovered, has a new driver in the works to support tiger, and right now, I upgraded to the latest version of the driver (for 10.3.9) and it seems to turn off the audio once in a while, specially when the system is in stand by, with reason 3. it seems there are no problems and I haven't got to tested with cubase 3 yet.

Hi Mac users,

DP user reporting as requested.

I installed Tiger this past Friday. But not before I went to the MOTU site and confirimed that MOTU stuff is fully conpatable. You download new drivers for everything and away you go. I am now running DP4.52, 828mkII, MTP AV, MX4 and MACH 5. I'm still testing. But, so far, everything is working fine.

The only problem I've found is that OnyX will not work I'm sure there will be a new Tiger version soon.

After over a week with Tiger, it hit me: THIS is OS that kicks OS 9 (and all others) out the door for being way too sloppy and slow -- and that's a mouthful of diamonds from a jazz musician who loves his 1938 Selmer tenor sax but always gigs with the Yamaha Custom. At last! The Digital Age coda -- and it's time to play. Build the next musical testament to human sound-making now!
