Beforehand : repair your drive and permissions
Update using the 10.4.9 Combo update you can download from the Apple website.
Repair permissions again.

We received the following announcement from PACE the providers of our copy protection technology for MAC. Briefly, if you are using an Intel Mac and want to update from MAC OSX 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 you should do so using the “combo update” by clicking on the link below. DO NOT use the automatic Software Update in MAC OSX. This problem will affect ALL PACE protected products not just Synful. These include Digidesign, Waves, and many other software music products. We have not experienced this problem directly ourselves but felt we should forward this message from PACE to all of our customers.
