Also see that your hard drive is in shape (Apple disk utility) with enough space left on it for the update to his things. Run the BSD scripts also (use OnyX for that), it'd do good.
I've a few people having problems like this with 10.3.6 and 10.3.7, in the end it was the update that went wrong for some unknown reason. They did it again and bingo.

lepetitmartien, Actually I went both routes first I tried to run the upgrage through the Apple software update and after that did not work I tried to download the upgrade packagae....
I may have to reinstall Mac OS X back onto my external HD and try the upgrade again. I ran into this problem once with an iMac another external HD and with that one I had to download a firmware upgrade...
I have done a few searches and you were right a lot of people have had problems with this Mac OX upgrade to 10.3.6 and 10.3.7...
