Everything worked super cool before the update, but now, no sound comes out of my system. I'm using a firewire sound module (edirol fa-101) into a 12 in powerbook with 756 megs of RAM. However when I use "built-in" audio option in sys prefs, sound works again. So clearly it's a driver issue between edirol and apple's latest update. Any tips folks?

Have you tried trashing the driver, the prefs for audio and driver, reinstall, repair authorizations and restart?
If then it doesn't work, there may be something fishy with the driver.

Uh no. If you'd be so kind, can you outline how I do the things you just mentioned....or point to a site that explains it. Thanks a bunch. Great site btw.

prefs should be in your user library /Preferences/whatever they call themselves - search for edirol or fa-101 or whatever.
I think lepetitmartien means repair permissions (am I correct?) If so, then open Applications/utilities/Disk Utility and repair your boot volume's permissions.
Restart. I know Apple HAS removed the restart button from new keyboards, but come on... hehe

Ok, this is getting freaky. I couldn't find anything named edirol or fa=101 in library - prefs, etc. I even searched for the name "edirol" and "fa-101" and my search came up with zero entries (However it is clear that in my sys prefs edirol options are indicated in both input and output). A friend suggested that I try downloading the driver and reinstalling it, hoping there would be an uninstall option upon right before the install. But no luck. Actually, it wouldn't allow me to install, a warning popped up warning that I needed OS 10.3. Ok folks, now what?

Hi. Thanks for the prompt reply. Actually, that's exactly what I did last night, to no avail. Also did repair permissions. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...

If it does not appear (the edrol) in the sysems preferances (light switch in dock) > sound > input and output, then you have a driver issue, firewire cord issue, or powerfailure to the edrol.
Edrol is usually fairly quick with updaters, so keep checking with them.
I NEVER update my OS, unless I know for certain that all my software, and hardware will function correctly.

This is simply a problem of Mac being faster than Edirol, there will be a new driver coming in the next two weeks. Oh and this nothing just wait until Tiger hits......
