Hey everyone! I have a question or two... I have been called upon to put together a demo reel for a cat in L.A. looking for film music. I'm using Logic Pro 7 and I amd very happy on the side of actually producing tracks. Now I would like to know if there is a software out there that will enable me to rip scenes from a DVD and also enabling me to remove existing music? My partner expplianed to me that on the DVDs there is a speech and music folder. So I figure just delete music folder, but his program is like 1,000 dollars. I'm trying to get product complete so I can make money. So I can afford thousand dollar programs. For now I would like to find one that would enable me to do the above stated. Can anyone help me out?

I understand your situation. Our company has been based in LA for long enough to advise.
if you proceed you might run into a buzz saw that is not pleasant.
Ripping scenes may constitute copy right infrgments. (U.S. i.e. the Feds).
It's not worth it this early in your work life to get your butt bustted.
Now, for this guy who wants you to put music together for film, he must front you some $ for your time. Oltherwise he is, in our opinion, putting your sweet rear end out there while he sits back and bets on the Red Sox.

The guy wants me to take music off an existing movie. Like Seven... Take 60 seconds of a scene and create origianl music replacing original music. Just to see how or what I would produce. Just as a test to me.. not for any production or re-release.

Kiowa is right.. To rip off other folks stuff, no matter the porpose, is copyright infingment.
If the person you are working for (of hoping to work for) is serious, they will provide you with some demo footage to work with.

If you can find the money somehow. Lay down a track of three or four tunes on a CD that you think would do for a feature or television series.

Hey Dreadman, we have found ourself in the same position as yourself. I am film music programmer with six films to my name but recently have started a company to promote my self, and the people I work with, as composers working to picture. The solution we found was to approach video artists through local colleges and trade magazines to offer them a deal whereby they allow us to us their visuals on our showreel and they get to use our music on theirs. This method also has the advantage of getting in at grassroots with the people who may end up the moguls in later life. Also good training in dealing with directors (people skills forms a large part of this job) who can be a tricky bunch.
