I'm listening to "French Connection" by Simon Stinger, becuase I just downloaded it from iTunes. Although I am only about a minute into it, it sounds catchy. It also sounds like it came straight from 1983. I think Apple's new free track of the week is a great idea; it exposes people to a lot of music that they wouldn't otherwise be exposed (me, for one), and sources say that they have sold a lot more songs since they started having free songs last week, I guess people are coming for the free tracks and staying to buy more tracks. Everybody wins. Including the artists who are getting heard only because Apple gave away one of their songs, letting people hear them and buy more of their music (possibly).

I'm listening to "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden, from their album "Superunknown." This is an incredible song, it is hard rock and melodic at the same time. i honestly believe that Nirvana did not exist, Soundgarden would have been the king of grundge/metal, etc.
this sounds like a fun topic, i could get some of the songs the members of macmusic are mentioning.

I agree with you (^^^ up there ^^^), Soundgarden is one awesome band. If you liked Rage Against The Machine at all (another of my favorite bands), I take it you like Audioslave? They're a bit different, but I still love the sounds.

Listening to Illioi on the Seven album by Zap Mama. It came up at random out of my itunes list. Everybody knows Zap Mama of course?! World music. All I can say is go on itunes and listen to samples.

Does anybody listen to scat?

re scat question: Most good instrumentalists can scat really well while they're playing, in fact they seem to have trouble playing without. I believe recording engineers used to despair of Earl Hines or Oscar Peterson's 'vocals'.
There used to be a few amazing scat vocalese groups around, a few of them French, the terrific 'double six' spring to mind, plus a couple of contemporary bands, whose names escape me. Lambert Hendrix and Ross were probably the most celebrated practitioners...apart from Ella of course.

re Teen Town: Ah, the immortal Jaco Pastorius; what a player eh? Tragic end though.
At the moment I'm listening to Jan Hammer's '76ish album 'The first 7 days' . Wonderfully expressive synth solos, surprisingly quite gentle in parts though, with less of the manic. frenetic, slightly exhausting energy of the Mahavishnu Orchestra all trying to outdo one another.

The Album I had on my iPod this morning was London Calling by the clash. Specifically the last song I heard before getting out of the car was Spanish Bombs. It's been in my head alllllll day...
