i have an ibook running OSX and i downloaded protools free. protools only runs in OS9 though. regardless, i would like to be able to record drumtracks from my roland TR505 with my m-audio Uno 1X1 USB MIDI interface in protools. it seems as though protools doesn't recognize the USB interface. do i need a driver or something? what am i missing?
thanks. |

OK well you have succeeded in confusing me. You say that you want to record using pro tools free, but your running OSX, which is not supported by pro tools. Does this meen that you have installed OS9? If you are running OS9, you will need to install OMS, and yes the driver for the 1X1, BEFORE installing pro tools. This is for the midi interface only. You do realize that you will still need to make an audio connection to the Mac from the TR also. That is if you are planning to record the audio drum tracks from the TR.

yep.... I agree with Kaboom... plus also note that classic mode most likely will not work for doing this either and you will need to boot to OS9
also... if you weren't planning on recording audio from TR505.... to make drum tracks in PT Free with midi... you will need some type of sample or synth RTAS plugin for PT Free or otherwise you will never hear any sound. and actually if you want to get sound from TR505 into PT Free... you will have to get a cable with adaptor maybe that will fit from TR505 sound out to the Mac 1/8" mic input (not best sound quality) but you need the cable to be stereo or you will only get left or right channel output into mic input. if you decide to get audio interface... it will not work with PT Free and you will need to get a new app for sequencing as well unless you get Mbox, Digi001, Digi002 that comes with PTLE. -------------------- ----------------------------------------

ok. i don't want to record audio from the TR since it has midi capabilities. that is actually why i want to use a computer. i want to fully map out the songs that i wrote with the TR. i thought that protools free would be as good as any other app (and it's free) so tell me more about OMS and sample or synth RTAS plugins.

first... I might suggest reading my article on midi The World Of Midi
This may explain a few things for you such as the fact that midi by itself can not produce any sound unless it is routed to a sound generator of some type (sampler or synth whether hardware or software). So yes... using your TR505 with midi going into mac... you can record midi and program midi but... unless you have the midi routed to a synth plugin or sampler plugin... then midi produces no sound. So you might consider Sample Cell, SampleTank, Absynth and the list goes on. You might want to consider getting a better sequencing app though nad if you odn't want to spend lots of $$$... look into something like the Logic Big Box that comes with a couple synth plugs and a sample player for about $300 or less. -------------------- ----------------------------------------

cool! that helps me a lot. i still have a question though. how do i get the TR and ProTools to talk? protools won't recognize the USB port that my uno is connected to. is it all just a matter of which program was installed first?
thanks agan. |

ok never mind my last question. i got everything to connect (i think) i am now wondering how to use my TR505 as a module or if that is even possible. i like the drum sounds it has and i don't want some expensive program. is there anyway to use the TR as a controller as well as the sound module?

record the midi.... edit the midi (if needed)... playback the midi to TR505.... record the audio from TR505 into audio track
