Hi, get Mbox, you be in heaven I'm a seasoned (25 years) session musician with a hobby/semi-pro studio using protools 001. Do NOT get the 001., it's been discontinued due to PCI limitations on newer macs, (voltage issues) get anything with firewire or USB2 as it will be surely upgradable. I love protools and I've used lots of other software, It's the best. Elegant and intuitive. I also use it with reason and live rewired, it just plain ROCKS. I don't do electronica but I know many who have had great results in this artform with the platform I just mentioned. You will not be able to use vst for proprietary reasons (digidesign loves a closed market) it will never happen...HOWEVER fxpansion is about to release a rtas-vst plug-in wrapper that will allow vst to pipe into protools regardless of what digidesign wants. also, rtas (real time audio suite) plugs are expensive, but many company's are coming out with affordable plugs for PT such as PSP, OHMFORCE and DUY. good luck to you! write great music and have fun!!!

The first song I wrote using Reason, within an hour of getting it on day one, is still one of my favourites. Don't let anyone tell you that Reason is a piece of crap - good songs don't necessarily need $1 million hardware to record and take six weeks to mix.

Just thought I'd stick my crappy music oar in. biggrin.gif

aww, now you guys are making me remember the good ol' days of 4-track cassette recording in my parents' basement....

i know i managed to make a horrible first impression on anyone reading this thread, but please allow me to state my most basic belief about recording with hope that everyone here will accept the validity of my opinions and not hold the dark side of my passion against me: the only equipment anyone ever needs to capture the true nature of any song is 1 microphone, 1 track of tape, and 1 good musician... that is to say that the magic is in human nature and the balance between perfection and flaw - not in the gear or even the notes being played. the whole purpose of all of this gear that we use is to capture that purity, not to synthesize it or transcribe it to a robotic grid.

with this in mind, the reason (no pun intended) i'm so critical of music created with reason (or any sequence-based program) is that the program sort of lends itself to the exact opposite of this goal. the sounds you can get from it are practically limitless, and can be rich and full of expression - if you play them live. as soon as you step-record or quantize, the humanity is lost. basically what i'm trying to say is everyone go for it... make any and every kind of music you can conjure up no matter how good or bad anyone thinks it is - just please, for the sake of your own artistic expression, don't let the computer do the creative parts for you.

i guess you could call me a purist, but if you listen to my music (which hopefully i'll have available to link to in the future) you'll hear quite a variation between synthesis and live recording. i do tend to go both ways since i think mixing live tracks with computerized (NOT quantized) tracks creates an excellent dynamic contrast when done properly. really i like to try to go any and every way i can, so long as i can get my mind to open up to new things. anyway, i could keep rambling, but this post is getting a bit too long for my taste.

bye for now!
