Hello,
I have a standard G4 400. I was just wondering if it is possible to record the output of the sound card at a software level (without connecting the soundcard output to the sound card input). e.g. If I have something like a game running I wan't to record the sounds at a software level (because if I connect my soundcard output to the input I have no place to connect my stereo amplifier). Any help is appreciated. Thanks! |

I've never tried that out-to-in thing...watch out for feedback loops. If you put a splitter on there you run one set to your amp.
There's a shareware app called SoundExtractor that will pull the sounds out of some games. Complex games use compression. If you drop Quake's 'pak0.pk3' file onto stuffit expander it will unzip the whole thing including the wav files. Pretty cool. Not sure how to get to Unreal Tournament's sounds. There are more Windows apps that will do these things, if you've got a PC around somewhere (or Virtual PC). Check out http://balder.prohosting.com/newtonip/gametool.html |

I have used the out-to-in thing to record software synthesizers on the same computer as my recording software. In my case I don't really need to monitor it while it is actually recording, but if I did I would probably use the tape in/out on my stereo amp with the tape monitor switch that most stereos have to loop the sound back into the computer so that I could record it.

hi there,
awhile back i found a system extension on here called aiff writter which once installed you could select as the sound output in the sound control panel and it would record whatever was coming through soundmanager as a file on your startupdisk (i think?). it came with a short read me. i haven't used it in awhile so i don't remember the specifics. i think its in the share section. //c |

Hi again, I once tried that extension and it put my recording software into a loop, even when I had it turned off, for some reason. Things only went back to normal after I 'trashed' it. I am sure that I was just unlucky...

hello for the first time ,
what you said reminded me that i did have some things i had to sort out before aiff writter worked. i was using it with motu performer, and within this app and i assume most sequencer apps you can select soundmanager drivers seperately of the sound control panel. i don't run performer anymore but digital performer. i just checked it and i what i had/have to do to get it to run is to disable input as i guess it isn't very stable to run differing drivers for input and output (dp is very good about giving you usefull warnings). i also had to 'overide' the internal buffer size. i'm not sure why, or what this does...i understand that audio is buffered into a small amount of ram before you finally hear it to make audio run more smoothly, but overriding it , i dunno. i t probobly has something to do with the fact that since your not actually playing the file but writting it to disk, and this wouldn't require a buffer. the extension is fiddly, i'll say that much it is a nice option to have though. btw dp has a plug-in called audio tap which lets you route soundmanager output internally to any stereo audio track for recording, a pretty nice feature. ill used by myself. i've basically limited myself to dp, peak, pluggo, and soundhack. but before when i downloaded every interesting looking demo or piece of share/freeware i used it quite a bit more. //c //c |

Hello,
I have a standard sound card that came with my G4 400 and will be using Digi001 with ProTools. Has anyone used the Digidesign drivers available from the site to route audio from reason or other applications to an audio track in ProTools. Does that mean that if I have midi tracks in ProTools and am using an IAC Bus to get my sounds from reason, I can use the Digidesign drivers to record my audio from my midi tracks as an audio track in Pro Tools? Thanks everyone! I sill can't get Aiff Writer to with ProTools. Any ideas? |

hello foccaciaman (nice name),
i don't know pro tools, i tried the free version when it came out when i didn't have a solid audio sequencer yet. i wasn't about to learn the interface and i didn't like the limitations of it and its sibling, pro tools le (which comes with the digi oo1). i had a look on google for rewire and pro tools le. rewire is something i've heard about being used with reason and rebirth (plus a few others) that allows you to route the outputs of the programs into a sequencer or multi-tracking program. it doesn't look like pro tools le supports this (i could be wrong, i only glanced around) but i did findthis page http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/apr01/article...ools.asp....but this page seems to show it can be done another way. i encourage you to do the same (use a search engine). it looks the page explains pretty well what you have to do to be able to record in your case, reason, inside pro tools le. the paragraph is in the lower half of the page and has the header OMS, Software Synths & Direct Connect. i don't know about aiff writter, i gave you all the advice i know about using it. take it from there best. .//c |
