-spike-,

thanks, this helped halfway.

now DP recognizes my motif and all 8 ports as available midi outputs, but not inputs. possibly an even more confusing situation.

interestingly enough, or perhaps not, in the midi monitor window, the motif is classified as a "software device". not completely insane as it's receiving and transmitting via a usb-midi driver. Speaking of the midi monitor and inputs, the midi monitor still receives midi information when i play keys on the motif. still, DP4 is getting midi, but isn't letting me assign the device as an input to a midi track.

thank you again for your help. i'm halfway home

ALL,

deepest apologies for being such a freaking moron and wasting your time with my previous post.

of course dp4 wouldn't let me assign an input, i only have one. DP is now recording and playing midi perfectly.

-spike-, I am eternally grateful.
you are the man.

Thanks, DixieChicken!!
You da man! ...er, chicken.

I had heard before that the patchlists were located in the Library folder, but could not find them.

Then, after you mentioned the exact string, that is:
/Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/MOTU,
I looked for this again. I found my Library folder, then Audio, then MIDI Devices, but there was never anything in that folder -- no MOTU folder.

Then, after searching around, I just happened to see ANOTHER Library folder. This Library folder was in the User folder. So I thought, "maybe, just maybe", and opened it to find Audio folder, MIDI Devices folder AND the MOTU folder this time!
Woo-hoo!
So I copied that MOTU folder into the main Library folder (as: /Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/MOTU) and... voila! the patch lists appeared magically in DP4.

So, thank you again, dixiechicken, for guiding me along. I've been stumped on this one for 2 months.

Later,
BobbyA
