Waves... Disappointed!!!!!!!!

I was finally after many years of dreaming, praying and saving my wifes hard earned Euros... As I no longer earn anything sitting on my butt day in and day out mixin' n fixin; tweakin' n freakin', I digress... I was going to buy something from Waves... They didn't have a "Demo Download" for OSX 10.3. Say What!!!!

The "Waves Technician" had the nerve to say to me... "Upgrade to 10.5" Not only does he expect to get 2,000 Euros from me for Software I HAVE to purchase a System Upgrade too! "Oh hell no"!

About the new Macs on steroids I read a very interesting article in Sound On Sound, by the Editor, Paul White who speaks about his New Mac... I will post it "If" any of the 440 Forum Members wish to see it??? If not his conclusion: "Next time he wants to buy a new computer, please talk him out of it"!

This is a guy can have any gear he wants and he said the transition has been and remains a Nightmare. He's lost many of his favorite Plug-Ins, has Hardware issues and Registration on some Software is lost!

If you are a Newbie and buying New Gear, great.

But, don't try to fit a 2008 Ferrari motor into your 1970 Volkswagen... You "might" get it to work BUT....

Like I have said many times... NEVER CHANGE A WORKING SYSTEM.

In closing, "Finally"... Waves I am very Disappointed...

I feel your pain Mac Daddy. I actually upgraded my G4's OS to Leopard to keep up with Ableton Live (and a couple of other software platforms I use) updates and it was a semi nightmare. I actually lost use of my Hardware interface. I bought 2 last summer: one cheap one just to get me through for a little while and then an Apogee Duet. The whole thing was pretty stupid. I am not real happy about the haphazard nature of upgrading.....as a matter of fact, I went ahead and bought a MacBook Pro just to be able to run Waves plug ins because they are generally CPU hogs on anything less than a Dual Core machine. By the way, the Waves plugs are TOTALLY AWESOME on my new machine....also I'll be paying for all of this for at least a year (or longer, I just got laid off.....It's cool, so is everybody else....I am in good company). If you are willing to spend something like 5 grand and are willing to do your homework then, sure....go ahead and play the game. Kind of crazy to have to do something like that every 4 or 5 years though.

mortalengine....

Are you rich or what??? You are always buying new Gear! Apogee Duet.... You da man!!!

I think I'm going to stay with my G5 Dual 2GHz. It has served me well. I still have Software I have yet to explore!

I read Sound On Sound each month and my gear is still 'Hangin' Tuff'.

Apogee is a serious piece of gear. I remember when it first came out several years ago I wanted to purchase it, but it was too expensive. I settled for RME Hammerfall DSP Multiface and RME Analog/Digital Interface ADI-8 DS. I think I got them both for what one Apogee cost!!!

The Apogee is a natural with Macintosh and any Newbie using Mac should save their money and purchase one. The "Interface" is the single most important piece of gear in your music chain...

mortalengines, can I borrow some money?

The Duet is pretty inexpesive actually, I got it for 430 dollars US. It is only 2 in and 2 out. If I need more inputs though, I gotta say I would think nothing of shelling out the 2 thousand for the ensemble. It sounds THAT good. I'll never go back. The Waves plugs and the new Mac.... not so cheap. Let's not even talk about it. Again, I expect to be paying for some of this stuff for the next year or so. I thought I would just sell a bunch of my old gear to pay for it, but that may have to just pay my other bills while I am on unemployment. Damn this wretched economy (LOL)!

mortalengines,

I just read an article in Sound On Sound and from what I got from it is this: With the New MacBook on steroids and the latest and greatest Software available, you can actually sell all your old gear and sit it the sun, have fun and make mon (Money)...

Perhaps I will reconsider selling and getting onboard with this new Portable Mac Movement....

Oh BTW show-off time... I am working with the Tupac Center in Stone Mountain, Georgia!!!!! Never heard of Stone Mountain? Martin Luther King, Jr. mentions it in his "I Have A Dream Speech"... Helping them build two studios. Studio A. ProTools. Studio B, Logic Pro and MACKIE.... Yes, "Magic" is still well and alive in the Universe... But, "Show Me The Money"!!!!!!

Welcome back to the States Mac Daddy. With any luck you will be there in the winter when the weather is actually bearable. It is seriously miserable in the summer.
