Hi there
If I connect external speakers via the usb port - can my software (presuming it has the capabilities) send audio to the usb speakers on one channel and audio to the headphones jack on another channel? thanks a lot |

Yes. Go to Audio MIDI Setup (in Utilities) and select Open Aggregate Device Editor in the Audio pull-down menu.
Then create an aggregate device with your USB output and the built-in audio output. You then have 4 channels of output which you can assign as you wish. Each program needs to have Aggregate Device as its output. |

I think I was confused because most people (on the forums etc) say that you need an extra soundcard or thing called an imic to give you an extra audio out in order to pre cue tracks using mixing software (one track playing on speakers, a different track playing on your headphones)
but this must be only the case if you want both audio outs to be your standard headphone jack style out. it seems like if I attach usb speakers directly they will automatically act as two exra channels (if selected as an aggregate device) im just mixing cds in my bedroom so the sound from usb speakers is sufficient for me does that sound right? thanks a lot for your answer (apologies for being new and a bit slow with this stuff :-) the guys at my local mac store said my only option was to buy a (very expensive) mixer, hmmm |
