I have the same problem with the same computer. I Believe the graphics card is overheating. There are no temp sensors in the PCI / AGP compartment. So when the graphics card is under heavy use it only had that crappy little heat sink to rely on. Evenually it fails. I have been able to login remotely after the freeze, but the status leaves the kernel unstable. Asking it to shutdown clean is too much most of the time.
I would love a fix for this situation. (Or manual fan control.... Hint hint, apple.)

from what the guys from macbidouille/hardmac have observed, it's a software problem, so our hope lies into an Apple update ONE DAY… (the problem wasn't around before Tiger on the same computers).

Gees this is great I have found others who share in this problem. It sucks ass. I try to play a vid in safari and died got to reboot. Then, everything works fine movies, etc, but if I wait a couple hours and come back the same freezing happens again. It doesn't completely die though if I was playing a song or using skype it still plays the song and I can still talk on skype. I also had ideas that it was the graphic card overheating, but it was never a problem before I upgraded to Tiger making it seem like a software issue. I would love a solution.

I have a G5 single 1.8 w/ a ATI 9600 XT

Anyone know if this problem exists on all single 1.8's. Bought mine when they first came out and it couldn't be running any more efficient, so I'm extremely wary of "The Tiger".

Thanks
