Hello,

I am brand new to this so please be patient with me. I have searched for an answer to my question but haven't found one yet.

I have a G4 laptop and an Oxygen 8 midi controller. I am trying to experiment (using Logic 6 software) with virtual instruments. So far I am playing around with the sample tutorials that came with the software.

There is an Audio tutorial and a Midi tutorial. I can open and play the Audio tutorial, but only hear the audio tracks, not the virtual instruments. When doing this I get audio output to my speakers via the minijack on my laptop. When I open the Midi tutorial I cannot get any sound when I play the recording. I am also unable to get any sound when trying to set up my own virtual instrument in a new file. My problem seems to be getting any sound via a virtual instrument.

I have set the audio hardware & drivers settings to use the 'built-in audio controller' which I assume is my sound card. I also checked a box in the midi assistant (OSx) under the audio tab that says 'playthrough.' This was a guess on my part.

Can someone give me some advice? I plan to buy an audio interface but want to at least hear a few things in the mean time. If anyone has any suggestiongs I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

-Chris

Hi Chris,

The MIDI tutorial is for external MIDI synthesizers/samplers. It is not for virtual instruments.
Try loading one of the demo songs for a virtual instrument e.g. ES2. (that is if you still have demo time remaining for it).
If you are hearing audio files you should be able to hear virtual instruments.

Do you know how to insert a virtual instrument in an audio object?
Do you have AudioInstruments listed in your arrange Window?
Open the "track mixer" click on the "Inst" button. Click and hold on the rectangular box above "Out 1-2" and select an instrument from the Mono or Stereo selection.
You should be able to hear sounds from this instrument when you play your keyboard. Do you see activity on your transport window (Where it shows "No In") when you play your keyboard?

Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense.

Formatj,

Thanks a lot for your response. Actaully no, I don't have 'audio instruments' listed in my arrange window, only 'audio' and 'ch #' listed. I clidked 'inst' in the and nothing showed up. I tried this with one of the demo songs as you suggested and now I see some.

Are there any virtual isntruments that ship with Logic or are they all demos? Maybe I forgot to install them?

Thanks!
