Maybe I'm missing something really obvious here, but I've been through the manual and the only way I can see to input music, aside from playing in real time, is to click on the notation view on the staff in the editor.

Is there any way to work in the grid view? Or by using a keyboard (external or musical typing) to enter individual real time notes in the editor, rather than just clicking in quarter and half notes? I find notation mode limiting with regard to expression, and record pretty unforgiving (yeah, I know you can edit afterwards, but I'd rather just get it in right the first time).

I'm looking at purchasing Logic, but I'm not really sure just how versatile the sound modelling feature is. Would it completely eliminate the need for any hardware modelling synths, like say this Alesis Ion I've had my eye on?:

How wide a range of sounds can I create with it? Can I create sounds from scratch, or only massage existing ones?
