I heard that sending phantom power down an unbalanced line can damage some dynamic microphones, and I was wondering if the same held true with a guitar. More specifically, I have a Firewire 410 and if phantom power is on its on for both mic pre-amps. So if I have a guitar in one (unbalanced 1/4 in) and a mic in another (XLR condenser) am I hurting the guitar?

I have been using a m-audio firewire 410 for a while now and loving it. I use it for recording and audio output on my powerbook g4 1.5 GHz. When just the other day I tried to play a song in iTunes and nothing played. The weird thing is when I double click a song the progress bar does not move, kinda like if it were paused, but its not. So I tried to restart the computer which did nothing. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers, repaired permissions, and finally I tried a clean install of the OS. There is still no sound output from the firewire 410 at all, in any program. I also does not accept any midi data. The light on the front is solid blue which makes me think that the connection and hardware is fine but I don't know.

I have only tried the 1.5.3 osx driver, should I try using an older version? Or is that pointless? Any help is greatly appreciated.
