I am trying to figure out the best and simplest software to purchase for my home recording needs. I have a G4 iMac and a Yamaha P80 with Midi outs. All I want is multitrack, some mixing capability, some drum (or the ability to add drum) and a mic input. In essence an updated 4 track to compose demos on. Are my only options an Mbox and Protools?

I like Metro 6

There are some simple 4 trackers out there, check in theAudio Recording Located in the soft ware section of this site (thumbnail up top labeled "soft")

And no, your only options are not an Mbox and ProTools. It's a good choice, but Steinberg/Cubase SX and Emagic/Logic do similar bundles of hardware and software that are worth checking out.

The current Pro Tools LE bundle of software is pretty good, with versions of Reason, Live, Amplitube and something else, but beware the inability to load AudioUnit and VST plug-ins to Pro Tools. Once you're on that Pro Tools path, there's no turning back!
