There are a couple of things you can do!
Buy Norton Utilities/Drive 10 or some such disk utility - and run the checks on your harddrive. I this doesnt work, go to the system folder and thrash the Finder preferences. Doesnt work??
Start the computer with Extensions off ( holding down shift-key ) If this works likely one of your extensions or its prefs-file is corrupt. Throw the prefs-file away and reboot your computer
You can use the Extensions manager to successively put extensions and control panels back while booting up your computer, while trying to find the offending extension/prefs-file.
If you dont bother with the above scheme: Reboot your G4 from the original CD and reformat your harddrive and install the system from scratch. Be sure to backup things you consider important to you. A format wipes the harddrive totally clean.
If all this fails, you likely have a hardware problem, you should have a hardware test-cd with your computer, boot from this cd and run the hardware-tests.

Yes, I have had similar problems with my own G4 800 mhz running Logic 5. I have experienced these problems since installing a lacie harddrive and the Arturia Moog modular. It may have been something to do with the version 1.0 software of the moog, or the firewire bus conflict between my MOTU 828 and the drive. I am not sure. Any suggestions welcome...

There are reported problems in different forums with some fw-interfaces & some brands of fw external harddrives.
Motu:s Techsupport recommendations are as follows, for daisy-chaining. Computer --> fw-harddrive --> Motu 828 MK-I/MK-II
Also connect your fw-peripherals directly to the fw-port on your computer. Avoid usb & fw-hubs.
