Hello folks...
I own a Fostex D-108 hard disc recorder, and I am now working with a friend who uses pro tools on his Mac. I'd like to connect my Fostex to Protools and dump song data back and forth, take my Fostex home, add some tracks, bring it back and dump the new files to his protools system. I believe this is possible, but can someone tell me the best way to go about it? I want the metronomes in each unit to remain synced, of course! Thanks for any help given! |

You should set either ProTools or the Fostex to send MTC (MIDI Time Code).
The other one should be set to receive external sync (MTC). You will also need to have a MIDI cable connected so that this MTC can be sent/received. This will allow both computer and Fostex to Lock so when you play one the other will follow. Do you need any more info than this? Are you on OS 9 or OS X? |

Thanks a lot, that really helps and seems quite easy. As far as the actual transfer of recorded data, should I do that by actually putting one unit into record mode and simply record the tracks where I want them, or is there a easier/quicker way to load/save the data in some sort of bulk dump?

Yes, the the unit you want to transfer the data to should be set to record and the device already containing the data should be set to play.
If the computer and Fostex are both fitted with ADAT I/O then you can transfer 8 tracks at a time. I guess an alternative method is to use the SCSI port of the fostex if the Mac also has SCSI. You could transfer files from one to the other via an external SCSI drive. The only issue here is that the files will need to have a timecode reference for their start points or all start at Bar 1 beat 1 (0 seconds). Does the fostex machine support SDII files or just WAV? Does the Mac have a SCSI card? |

Thanks again- the Fostex has some of these options available, and I will have to take a look at the Mac and see what's available there. At least I know of one way that will work for sure, and I'm sure one of your other suggestions will probably work for me as well. I'd like to thank you for your help, and I'm off to give things a shot!
