well... logic 4.8.1 takes advantage of the velocity engine so maybe an older powerbook may be the answer... but it depends how much speed difference between the ibook and powerbook as a newer ibook 600+mhz g3 should be plenty fast enough but I think 400+mhz g4 tibook would be close to same in performance thanks to velocity engine but this is just a guess.

Mmm, I was going to say something similar. Yes, Logic 4.x was optimised to run on the G4, although I ran Logic 5 for quite a while on this here iBook G3 600MHz and it performed reasonably well. New iBooks go up to 900MHz, but then again they don't cost that much less than a new 12" PowerBook, although the iBook's screen would be bigger. Although, again, my iBook only has the 12" screen and it's never really bothered me.

You could probably find a second-hand G4 TiBook - anything up to 800Mhz - fairly cheap (relativey speaking). That would be the best buy, I think. It might be a little more than you planned on spending, but it will last you much longer in terms of raw performance. And you're bound to upgrade to Logic 5 or even 6 at some point - they really are much better than 4.x.
