Yes we are only using one login account on one computer. We are a small school and only just starting out on this path. Our resources are modest and we (my music colleague and I) like to do our own support. In my view being self-supporting is much better in the long run: empowers the user and reduces tech support costs. smile.gif

BTW, about files permissions: if you suspect any problem there, run Apple's 'Disk Utility' (in the Utilities folder) and use the 'Repair Disk Permissions' buttons (First Aid tab)

Dear Mackillop and in fact all interested parties, your last point raises an interesing issue.

I work at a sizeable adult education institution. My job description includes technical maintenance and advising the head of music on hardware and software purchases. I have no dedicated technician and in fact, the rest of the college runs mainly on pcs (digital arts however runs macs).

I have been told by the executive committee that 'technical work' is a 'waste of my resource' and that I should ask the IT services to maintain/ugrade etc. Although very helpful, the IT services do not have the specialist knowledge in my area.

My point is the same as the one you make. That in fact today's musician must also be a an informed and critical technician. Moreover, many of our students come to study our courses precisely for our technical expertise.

Perhaps we can start a forum topic for those using Macs in education in our specialised field?

In fact, I shall be requesting the fee for my active membership on Mac Music from the college as I feel it would be a worthwhile long term investment.

I quite agree with you Midiwife. Self-supporting users of technology will actually save an organisation both time and money, especially schools, where I am based. If you take a little bit of time a non-technician can easily do tech support, especailly on the Mac Classic. OSX's BSD Unix core is certainly harder to maintain (ie more time and more money) but less than a Windows environment. I have run a Mac network without any kind of formal training and also tried to understand and manage a single Windows PC in a previous job. Aaahh: Registries and DLLs and viruses! Having said that XP _is_ very good.

And thanks webmaster but using Disk Utility to repair permissions was the first thing I did. Thanks anyway.
