I Know O posted this a while back but it is back again, after I thoughtit was the firewire cable it is not as a new one was puchased and bam it is back. Any thoughts and suggestions?

Have you tried adjusting the audio buffers? Increasing the amount might help.

How about the drivers for your 896? Latest versions? Any dialogue/preference boxes to tweak?

Is a lot happening in the song at the time of the hiccup/does the hiccup happen just after a lot has happened? If too many tracks are playing simultaneously, my system "chokes" in a similar fashion.

Try lowering the overall mix levels (by a lot - 10db or more) and then normalize the stereo 2-track mix in another app like Peak LE to bring the level back up. That cures it for me sometimes.

Also, you simply might not have the same problems in OS 9. There are still dark mutterings about OS X not being able to handle so much audio bandwidth.
