Somebody pelase help me - I'm a fairly inexperienced user, but have been running logic 4.8.something on my Lombard Powerbook for a little over a year now, not really understanding OMS and not using MIDI that much, but i now have a brand new machine and would like to hook up either

a) my midiman midisport 1x1 usb interface
b) my roland edirol pc-300 controller keyboard

to my new G4.

When I try to run OMS Setup it freezes after trying to find some interface or other, very early on in the proceedings. The obvious things like paring down to the basic extensions haven't helped me at all.

I have to run under OS 9 because none of my software is for OS X unfortunately, but this is getting frustrating. Any help would be MUCH appreciated biggrin.gif

Don' know if i can be a lot of help, but you have my sympathy. I use an Edirol SC-D70 module which has a midi and audio interface. Requires OMS for best results. By the way, did you try to use Logic without going into the Environment window yet? I got that suggestion from someone on the site, and I was able to get some stuff recorded; audio and midi and while just working with the factory setup it started to make more sense. Do you have OMS configured? I'd try not even bothering with an autosong for now. Just configure OMS setup and go. I still have trouble accessing my instruments/patches. Every tuturial is for Platinum it seems and I'm running the lowly Silver. What version do you use?

Yeah, I have no idea about how to understand the Environment, but I have bought a book on Logic and was hoping to really get to grips with the software. The fact that I now can't even run the 'setup' of OMS is frustrating.

That's where the problem lies, I can't even "configure the OMS setup and go" unsure.gif on this machine due to the repeatable freeze(though I had no problems on my Lombard Powerbook 333 under OS 9.1).

I have also tried installing OMS for the same purpose on a new dual-867 bought by a friend of mine for music. Eactly the same freeze. This makes me wonder is therre's a harware fault with the current G4s, even connected to the usb ports maybe?

When it does work, I'll be running Logic Silver 4.8.

Thanks for any replies

I ran into a similar problem, perhaps the same one, trying to install Cubasis 2.0 (which said it will work under OSX, but didn't have the nifty blue X badge...). Now I can't even fire up Cubasis at all, Used to, before I tried to configure OMS (and FreeMIDI, which was a disaster). Re-install, no dice. Something about "Cannot find external source" or some such.
.
I gave up.
.
Am now multi-tracking audio using Amadeus and iTunes (which is pretty darn cool!). So now I keep mixing down (bouncing) to .wav and finally to .mp3, with effects limited to the appropriate tracks. Synched and everything!
.
But I'll have to solve the MIDI problem later. You know, when a sub $1K solution hits the bricks.

Okay, I have a workaround!

I was able to get OMS to recognise my Midiman 1x1 interface and add a generic device to it using OMS setup on my G3 powerbook. I then saved the OMS setup details as an OMS setup document to the hard drive of my Powerbook, then simply copied the file over to my new dual-G4 Powermac, which proceeded to work perfectly.

Result!

But why would OMS setup freeze on the G4 and not on a similar OS installation on my Powerbook? Puzzling....

Perhaps I can help you. I just gave a RolandED PC300 to my son for Christmas and have spent quite a few hours setting it up.

1) go to the Roland and OMS web sites and get the current versions of the respective driver and software at www.edirol.com/support/drivers.html and at www.opcode.com/products/oms/

The versions on the Cubasis CD are not current and do not work for the PC300!

2) Check out the Propellerhead web site. They do a good job of explaining how to load OMS for a USB/OSX mac and the pitfall that crashes your OS. Set up OMS as they recommend on your MDD; oddly it is needed for Jaguar as well.

At the same time I downloaded the REASON demo, set the preferences to the Roland and am able to play music w/o a hitch.

On your OS9 mac: decompress OMS, decompress the Roland driver, set up OMS. Your Roland should now be set up correctly. With Cubasis I am able to see the "In" light blink when I play on the Roland keyboard, so I know it is connected, but do not have sound. I assume this is due to my ignorance of sequencer software. Which leads me to the question: does anyone know a good book or video cassette that explains Cubasis AV and other sequencer software?

I hope this helps you!
