let me put it simple. I am using Logic on osx. I have never used Logic for os9. I have no idea what VST is, and I dont care, since I won't be able to use it, unless its "carbonized", whatever this means.
So, do I HAVE to dish out another 300 dollars just to get new sounds? I have a friend who uses FruityLoops ( I know, on a PC ) and he gets whole libraries for free somehow... whats the alternative on macs? should I go back to os9 just to get free samples and sounds? or do I have to wait until a VST substitute comes out?
Because a day (soon) will come when I get tired of my keyboards built-in sounds... And a 30-day trial ( for the exs24, etc. ) is still a 30-day trial.

Have a look at http://www.bitshiftaudio.com/pHATmatik is now available for OS X. It is a free REX file player in Audiounit format. You can then also search the web for free REX files. Also, Logic is not supporting the VST format in OS X, just Audiounit.

( coreaudio? ) also, so I search for audio samples and download some on the net..now what? i have never dealt with this before... do I just import them all into an audio track ( or audio instr. track? ) in Logic?? how do I go about this? and, do I need something like the exs24 to use them indefinitley? thanks to all for the help

hi tokyoroland. audiounits is a confusing term. it's actually the code that osx uses to provide plugins. audiounits are a part of core audio, which is the code that osx uses to deal with all audio issues.coreaudio has been present in osx since way before jaguar, jag just uses it more efficiently(hence 10.2)! all logic versions that work under osx work exclusively with core audio, meaning that the only plugins that will work are those specifically coded for audio units. no vst, no rtas, etc, currently. you can "just import them all into" INDIVIDUAL audio tracks, and edit/eq/compress/effect them that way. this CAN be the best route with a lot of things, however, logic dosen't like mp3's! you can, of course, convert mp3's to aiff, wav, etc with apps like audacity(free). exs24, can be used as an audio instrument. it will load and play your audio files. you'll also find that it will provide some great features that really help you squeeze something special out of them! it's your choice...

I'm sort of considering the same thing. I'm trying to learn midi so i can get more flexibility, however i'm having a hard time getting logic to load both my midi banks. I've heard of Storm and Reason, are these midi sounds or audio sounds?

storm and reason are music production programs, not midi or audio sounds. and for reference, MIDI only refers to the midi control language: there isnt really such a thing as a "midi sound": when you play sounds back using your general midi soundcard/device, you are hearing low quality digital audio samples triggered by midi control data. reason and storm are standalone applications, though reason can be rewired to other applications (for instance ableton's live, cubase vst, &c). what midi banks are you trying to load in logic?

hey, metachor
I'm trying to access my non-general midi sounds from my yamaha psr 270. I'm reading the logic introduction manual, but it just isn't making sense to me. I thought maybe storm or reason would give me access to more sounds, but i do want to start using midi for its editing capabilities. I know audio isn't the best way to go for what i'm doing, synth-techno type stuff.

cydonia- there's some thread floating around about an alternative to the PC fruity loops, which many of my friends use for techno... I think Storm is mentioned??? But as for Logic I am also a beginner who is looking for sound banks, and is downloading various wave samples, but hasn't tried to incorporate them into my keyboard quite yet. But if you need to find some sounds, formatj gave me some great ones to use once I activate my exs24 demo, and if you just type in "audio samples" in like google you can find a whole bunch of free ones that have MANY techno type sounds in them. Other than that, you may want to upgrade your keyboard! I have a PSR 215 laying around in my room... But if you don't really care about audio or whatever, you may want to get Reason 2, its expensive, but less than Logic ( atleast Logic Platinum! ) - jeff
