how many VST fx are u running? some of them can be real cpu hogs. I'm running cubase V5 on a 400m G3 and have had 2 learn 2 be very economical with vst fx...esp. reverbs. Another good practice is to setup an extension set with only the necessary extensions for cubase running (i.e. turn off any internet, printer etc. extensions) and save it and use it when running cubase, any extra or unnecesary extensions take a little more cpu away from u. Also try different disk block buffer sizes and track counts in the audio systems setup (there's a good article on balancing cpu/latency in the june electronic musician...back issues online). Hope I've been of some help...good luck.

just had another thought...maybe u need to defragment/optimize your hard drive. it can make a big difference.

and another...the buffer size or ram cache cache in your soundcard preferences or control panel may be too low. Remember low latency means more cpu. are u recording at high bit/sample rates? e.g. 24/96? if so try a bit lower.

Thanks for the ideas!

I already have my system running on a 'cubase' set of extensions so that rules that one out.

As for effects...I have a reverb and a chorus on the track and I'm thinking that my Mac (G4 Tipowerbook) should be able to handle that. The track is only 3 mins long!

BUT!!! You may have solved the prob....my HD is quite fragmented so I'm running the defragmentation prog as we speak and I'll let you know the outcome!

Thanks for the help :-)

Hi there!

Did you solve the prob U had with the cpu/playing audio??
I have the same problem right now and it suddenly appeared after I had worked with cubase for months. Right now I can only play audiofiles once. then I have to reload cubase.
I tried everything but couldn´t find any solution, do U know something??

Hmmm Interesting. I tried for about a month to solve exactly this problem. I thought because it was using the mac internal soundmanager to run the audio thru, That the problem existed there. I posted this on the Cubase forum to no avail. Machine is a 733 with 512Mg Ram running sys 9.2.2. I also own Nuendo and this works well So i have been less & less worried bout cubase. But it still annoys having been beaten by a piece of software...Grrrr. tongue.gif
