Tibook 800 Or Dual 1.25, Which to choose? Options

Hey Guys!

I'm about to spend 17000 Euro on a DAW, and I'm having trouble deciding what to buy. I want reliability and a rig that's gonna last me a long time.
The Tibook is cool and portability is sexy and all that, but is it powerful and stable enough for making a record at home?
Is a firewire hd capable of handling 24-32 tracks of audio? Does Logic 5 running under OS X make use of the dual processor system?

I think the tibook is going to be revamped soon so I would hesitate before purchasing . Rumors of 1Gigahertz processor and possbile DVD-R are floating around.

hmurchison is right,
i have both, and the only value i place on the powerbook is the fact that i can sit comfortably on the sofa when using it/can travel lightly with it!
the desktop machine will always outperform the laptop, raw power will always be more useful...

yep, i agree with the majority here... i have a 500mhz tibook and still end up using my 350mhz Yosemite G3 for most work. The tibook was primarily for live performances and traveling. I almost decided to sell my G3 and Digi001 after getting the Tibook but decided I would rather keep it because I still use it a lot.

To sit into a laptop, computer have to cut corners, unfortunately, it's the ones the most useful for power computing: cache, HD speed, max ram, display etc.

If you're main work is best suited on a desktop, go for it. then eventually you can have a laptop for travel or help.

If you're never at home and can get with it, go laptop.

Laptops simply can't outperform desktops, plain and simple. And personally I begin to hate gigs with guys fixing their laptops and balancing their bodies without anything else on stage. Get a desktop and shake that ass !

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to go desktop. My dealer also recommended this, and the desktop setup is actually going to be 1200 Euro cheaper, nice.

It'll be the dual 1 gHz, though, I was told the that the extra .25 don't really justify the higher price.

I've never owned a DAW before, and I can hardly wait to get started

I've noticed a lot of people are grumbling that the new dual G4s are very noisy (ie the fan). People who bought the new duals have returned them for a dual G4 from the previous range, the Quicksilver. This fact might explain why some stockists are suddenly running out of Quicksilvers where a few weeks ago they were desparate to shift old stock.

Also, MacUser magazine (go to www.macuser.co.uk to read the review in full) reckoned the new dual 1GHz was not worth the money over the new dual 867 - the performance boost was minimal in their tests. They had not tried a 1.25, but hoped for better things from that. Maybe a dual 867 would be enough - at least then you've saved the money to cover the cost of an Apple 17" display.

Just thought this might be worth knowing, Schack. Enjoy your new DAW, whatever you buy - I'm sure you will!
