OMG!!! i JUST made the biggest mistake in my life. I had a midi file in my desktop that was the same name of a project file in my project folder. So i didnt think it would overwrite it because i thought the projects file had different type of extension.., not .MID!!! thats so weird... So wen i passed in the folder it asked me to overwrite, i said yeah thinking it was going to overwrite an old midi file but it OVERWROTE THE PROJECT FILE!!! crap! i dont know what to do anymore.
What i did is that i got this 3rd party software to recover deleted files, i got a bunch of 50-10 mb midi files and recovered them, they all have weird names and numbers. I have to see which one is that right one now but they all have.mid extensions.. I use DP 5.12 I dont know how to change their extension to a project files extension.., for some reason it doesnt even say it. even when i get the files info. HOw can I check if one of the midi files is the project file??!! please help me now!!! I have the most expensive musicians that have recorded on this song project and i dont want to to loose them the good thing is that i still have all the sound bites and everything, the only thing im missing is the project file.., Digital PERFORMer experts! recommened me something to do!! thank you sooooo osoo much!!! thanks |

Normally you can click on the file name and it highlights the name, wait a second or so then click it again, then you should be able to edit the file name and extension!

Guaranguito,
The DP files don't actually use an extension (or at least none of mine do) for their project files. You can check this by going to your Finder menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and turn on "Show all file extensions". If the MIDI file on your desktop that was moved also had no extension added to it (the Mac doesn't always rely on the 8.3 file naming convention to map to the application that is required to open it, normally the file type does this instead), then overwriting the file is extremely possible. In that case, it is doubtful that you can recover the file with software used to pull up 'files that have been deleted' since that is relying on the fact that files which are deleted are not truly gone until they are written over with other data. In this instance, that is what has occurred. The file was overwritten. I would simply recreate your project file in DP and then add the soundbites back into the project manually. It will be tedious, but it will get you back to where you were. At least you didn't lose that. Your automations and other 'project specific' data will most likely also have to be recreated. Wish there was better news for you. Get some coffee, take a deep breath and dive in. It'll be a long session today. peace -------------------- |

I use Norton utilities with unerase and that brings back files from long way back, unless you resently formated your hard drive.

well maybe you didn't uncheck the "hide extension for known file types" from tools\folder options
and if your sequencer was by default loading midi and its own files, the midi file was view as his own file. project(.mid but it can't be saw) and project(.seq can't see it too) was the same thing for the sequencer... |

Please, never ever dare to use the Norton utilies on OS X, Symantec stopped the developement for a reason! It was a bag of bugs.
Now, on the specific issue of our friend, first thing is to stop to use the hard drive AT ONCE. Then for example try to recover the file with DataRescue. If it does not find it, it has been really overwritten and it's dead… -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home
