After a quick look on the emagic site, 5.2 is a free upgrade… for X seem to be the silence for the moment, but as it'll come on 24th at the later… we'll know it soon.

Yes you never know, remember Apple is charging in Europe 166,24 € for Jaguar blink.gif

The scandal of Summer 002!

(rant rant rant) angry.gif

(btw, in Europe it's not Jaguar because of a certain trademark of beautiful cars… so say… X.2 wink.gif

yeah... the jaguar update was a bit lame. I don't mind paying for an update when it really offers something for the money but just didn't see that much of an improvement that made it worth $130 US so I will be staying with 10.1.5 until they make the update worth my money.

Don´t get me wrong, I´m not a fan of Apple´s policy on OSX pricing either, but I think anyone doing audio on osx will have to swallow hard and just get Jaguar. I´m using the retail build (downloaded, since I preordered 4 weeks ago and couldn´t wait :) ).

The integration of MIDI and Audio in the System Preferences is very nice and I doubt that MIDI drivers written for 10.2 will work in 10.1.x. Audio drivers don´t seem to be a problem, the Hammerfall alpha drivers work just as buggy under 10.2 as under 10.1.5. However there´s a Cardbus symbol in the top bar now, just like it was mounted on the desktop in os9. And yeah, the 30% speed improvement is true (on a Powerbook 800 at least). All my audio applications work flawlessly under 10.2 as well, so noone has to worry about their expensive software not being supported. Now if only emagic brings on those midi drivers and the osx version of Logic....

You've got to be kidding.

It's one thing to lament the lack of OS X apps and that's understandable as many components in OSX have matured under 10.2 to the point where Developers have a stationary target.

For those who want to know the REAL DEAL

OSX offers.

Quartz Extreme- If you have an AGP card with a card 16mbs or more you can take advantage of offloading some gui functions to the card. That means more processor cycles to your audio apps!

Multithreaded Finder- Tired of slow scrolling and windows. Tired of waiting for the finder...it's now multithreaded and much faster.

GCC compiler- most apps haven't been recompiled with the new GCC 3.1 compiler but when they do you should see a slight speed increase in many apps.

Rendezvous- Want to link up Macs without typing in networking settings. It's easy as pie with this.

Admin- Check out the new setting in the Get Info box. Easy to set permissions etc. Nice. More than one can be open now as well.

CUPS- have a pesky printer with no OSX drives CUPS(Common Unified Printing Service) allows you to print to some printers with flaky drivers. and YES USB printer sharing is BACK.

Sherlock3- Just flat out cool. Anyone who say this isn't helpful is crazy.

Addressbook- aren't you tired of duplicating your contact info in every app? Systemwide support for this should be an end to non synchronized information

Mail. much beefed up with GREAT anti spam support.

There's so much new in 10.2 anyone telling you it's a lame update is purely being disengenuous. EVERYTHING in 10.2 has been updated. It's a HUGE update with new features to boot.

The updates to CoreAudio, CoreMidi, and the new Midi Control panel are worth half the price alone if you make music with your mac.

personally... none of the above improvements warrants another $130 in my situation... I don't have ANY audio apps that run in OSX yet so audio and midi enhancements don't mean much, never really use sherlock much as is so an upgrade there doesn't do much for me, address book and mail work fine as is for me now, other than the slight speed increase... there is nothing about the 10.2 that really impresses me. But hey... if those things are important to you... then maybe it is worth $130.

I suppose if Logic and ProTools (and all my plugs) were ever ported to OSX... then it might be worth considering. wink.gif

I also don't think I will be paying the $100 a year ($50 for current members) to continue itools or continued use of idisk either. It was nice when it was free but as slow as idisk bandwidth is and the lack of interest in the other features isn't worth it to me. But that is just my opinion and I realize that there are people who think this stuff if worth the money.
