I just saw a real-world attempt by someone to convert some of her Akai CD programs to Soundfont 2 format (for loading into Reason and Unity) using CDxtract 4.

CDxtract 4 merrily performed the conversion without complaint or indication of any problem. Then she tried to load the converted .sf2 files in various programs that support Soundfonts:

1. Reason: Crashed every time she attempted to load one.

2. Unity Session: Although the files had the right extension, and even Unity icons, they were greyed out in Unity's file browser; it didn't recognize them as Soundfonts.

3. VSamp: Attempted to process the files, but stopped and complained that they didn't contain all the necessary resources.

Strike three.

Anybody else had any better result?

(This was posted in "Music with Macintosh on MacOS 9" because CDxtract 4 ONLY runs in 9.x--not even Classic mode. But the other programs were run in OS X. Don't we need another Forum category?)

Hi,
I've tried today with an Akai Cd to Sf2 with cdXtract4 Mac R3, and I've loaded the Sf2 in the NN19XT in Reason.
No problem at all.
Sf2 are loaded correctly with all splits.
No Freeze !
works flawlessly

I converted a lot of Akai programs to the sf2 format with CDXtract 4 Mac, and they all load fine in Reason, moreover when I transfer to my PC they load fine in my soundblaster card which I think could be considered as a reference.
So I don't think there is any problem with the soundfont conversion, now if your friend has a problem then he should send one of his soundfont files to support@cdxtract.com and I will be happy to check it and tell him what's wrong with his file.
Does your friend use the demo version or the full version ? So far no registered user has ever reported any soundfont conversion problem.

With all these good reports, it definitely must be a local problem and I have e-mailed these reports and urged the person to contact CDxtract's technical support. I have no idea why they haven't before (they aren't a close friend--have a studio I record at sometimes). it was in the midst of a session and the heat of trying to get some conversions to work for the session. Maybe just a problem with those particular files (?). I don't know enough about the program to know what all is involved.

Anyway, thanks for the balancing reports. I've passed them on and hope the person will act on them and get the problem fixed her end, or send copies of the broken files to the CDxtract folks so they can analyze it, since it sounds like CDxtract works as advertised.

Thanks again.
