Can They Cope??? Scrap Or Upgrade??, imac / powermac g4 -should i scrap?? Options

Hi, I've got a cople of quetsions. I'm running Reason and nundo or cubase using audio and effects and vst instr, rewired to a reason setup. I have two macs. One is an imac g4 1ghz with 768 ram the other is a powermac g4 733mhz with 768 ram also.

My question is shoud these machine be able to do this kind of work if they have enough memory? etc. Can I upgrade my imace any more and is it worth it. Should I cut my losses and trade it in. Same goes for the powermac. Both are struggling with ths setup right now. Lots of crackles and occasional crashing whereas when i ran the same thing on a decent PC it was fine!!!

Any sggestion and insider knowledge on the limitatins of these machines would be great. I don't want to keep flogging dead horses!!! Will

Which version of Cubase is it? 5 or SX? SX is not the most efficient program. Logic on those Macs would be OK.

On the other hand, very quickly it becomes more cost-effective to upgrade one's computers. The speed/RAM/hard drive capacity/OS benefits to be had from a new machine normally outweigh the benefits of hanging on to an old machine.

If you have a system that works for you, you don't need to change. If your current system is bugging you and you perceive limitations, you might do well to upgrade.

Thanks for the reply. My syatem is bugging me a lot. At the moment neither machine will run the setup i want efficiently. Is it possible to ge more ram in the imac? and do you think it will make a difference to the performance of either machinr to keep adding more memory?

oh, and it is sx on the imac and nuendo on the powermac. Although when i upgrade to os x. It will also be sx.

That seems pretty odd, because I run a G4 Desktop Tower 933mhz 1.25 ram, and a Power Book 1 gig mhz. with 715 ram, and can typically can load have many tracks and plugs per project, and for the majoity of the time is rock solid. I am contemplating upgrading, but almost hate to, when my systems are so consistent. I run he latest version of SX3, Ablelton, & Reason. I know I will reach a point where I will not have choice, but as long as things are stable, i am not jumping just yet.

On the other hand, if you are having major glitches, hiccups, and inconsistency in your in systems software/hardware, I would suggest that you go ahead and upgrade your system.

hmmm. you system is a bit better thn mine.. I'm running a G4 desktop with 733mhz and 758 ram - that coul dbe the difference. Just wondering if it's worth getting more ram?
